San Francisco can seem like a cross between a funhouse and a madhouse. If, like me, you have wiled away months in the city nicknamed the Paris of the West, you will know to expect the unexpected.

Once, in the heart of the grungy downtown Mission district, I saw a stranger dressed as a medieval knight. In Golden Gate Park, I came across an incarnation of Star Wars rogue Darth Vader.

The people's eccentricity is reflected by a slew of attractions with an Alice in Wonderland vibe. Learn about some of San Fran's most absorbing weird haunts and tours.

1. Vampire Tour

This dark side trawl of Gothic San Francisco is conducted by a wisecracking cape-clad actress called Mina Harker whose stage name comes from the heroine in Bram Stoker's horror novel Dracula. On the tour, Ms Harker plays a vampire that takes you around Nob Hill, the home of the privileged for over a century. Railroad barons built mansions there. Now, some of the city's most up-market hotels and restaurants stand on the hill's summit. But the affluence has an underbelly: vampires that haunt the tunnels below, according to Mina Harker, who claims to sleep during the day in a Nob Hill church.

2. Airship Tour

Innovation seems to come naturally to Americans, especially San Franciscans. Just look at the airship tour. Designed exclusively for passenger trips, the airship in question boasts a roomy cabin with giant windows. Try to imagine a more hypnotic experience than sailing in an airship across the city over the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset -- one particularly seductive advertised option. Made of laminate built by the same company that creates NASA space suits, the airship is supposedly immune to lightning strikes.

3. Haight-Ashbury

"Haight", as everyone calls it, has tourist trap overtones but is popular with reason. The grungy Gothic wonderland that served as the birthplace of the hippie movement teems with incense-laced, velvet-heavy fashion boutiques. In the street, surf dudes mingle with painted lady neo-Victorians and drifters of all stripes. The subculture playground is famous for hosting 1967's "summer of love", an offbeat festival of affection attended by anyone with a fondness for beads, flares and patchouli. Watch out for "the world's greatest record store", Amoeba Music, and Haight's signature pair of giant fish-netted legs sticking out from a window.

4. Coit Tower

An art deco icon made of unpainted reinforced concrete, Coit Tower was built atop picturesque local landmark Telegraph Hill in 1933. Thank honorary firefighter Lillie Hitchcock Coit. The eccentric benefactor apparently wanted to beautify the city. Some say that her tower was designed to resemble a fire hose nozzle. It certainly resembles one. Either way, you can climb it. Expect sensational views.

5. Camera obscura

Even native San Franciscans may be blind to the existence of this vintage landmark: a working model replica of an ancient kind of camera devised by Leonardo da Vinci. Enter the attraction's hushed velvet interior and you will see a bowl-shaped screen. Mirrors and lenses project a living image of the surrounding sea onto it. The gap between seeing the sea on the camera obscura and outside in the raw is like the one between dream and reality. Very Haight. Except this is the fringes of the Outer Richmond district.
